    Why Structure is No Longer Optional – The profession cannot rely on the ‘hit and miss’ outcomes of luck, habit, or goodwill. A structured, evidence driven framework is essential for a safe, consistent, high quality clinical learning environment.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    The Cost of No Oversight – Unregulated CEU structures create inequity and unpredictability. Without clear expectations, graduate readiness becomes a ‘postcode lottery’ rather than a professional guarantee.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    Reclaiming Accountability Through Global Standards – Universities need the power to demand quality, not hope for it.     Clinical education is the cornerstone of physiotherapy training. We call it essential, foundational, and core training, yet the reality is far less comfortable. No single model is universal or superior. The disparity in placement duration, supervision ratios, and practice settings is often inevitable, and sometimes even necessary. However, the unevenness of the clinical education experience is often not a pedagogical consequence, but rather, a product of custom, historical practice and lack of motivation to modernise teaching and learning.<\/p>\n

     <\/p>\n

    Despite guidelines from World Physiotherapy, university programmes and even formal agreements with clinical education units (CEUs), the absence of a globally-defined minimum standard means that CEUs ultimately determine what their clinical learning \u2018looks like\u2019, and it frequently sits outside university control. Students may be left confused by the mismatch between university teaching and clinical practice, leading to patient anxiety, an abandonment of evidence\u2011based therapy, and an erosion of student\/patient confidence. The consequences are predictable: inequity, inconsistency, and graduates whose competence reflects circumstance rather than capability.<\/p>\n

     <\/p>\n

    Our profession expects that every student deserves a safe, equitable, and educationally robust experience that prepares them for global standards of practice. Yet in many countries where physiotherapy is still developing, CEUs are in effect, producing physiotherapy technicians. Students are trained to operate machines and deliver routine protocols, without meaningful clinical reasoning. Leaving clinical learning to chance, to the spin of a roulette-wheel, is unacceptable.<\/p>\n

     <\/p>\n

    If CEUs are entrusted with shaping the next generation of physiotherapists, they must also be accountable for the learning they deliver. This is the moment where inspiration must meet responsibility. CEUs must ensure that students are supported through modern, evidence\u2011based training approaches aligned with globally endorsed physiotherapy curricula. International accreditation of CEUs is a powerful driver to optimise clinical learning impact. It offers a credible pathway to equity, transparency, and educational integrity. It is a mechanism for change, and a promise: that every CEU provides students with learning experiences that meet a minimum global educational standard. Universities should not be forced to rely on goodwill and tradition to provide competent clinical teaching, and students should no longer be subject to \u2018placement luck\u2019.<\/p>\n

     <\/p>\n

    This symposium examines the challenges created by inconsistent clinical education quality and seeks to define what clinical education must become. Defining a global minimum standard for CEUs and establishing explicit, measurable parameters for learning is not optional or aspirational, it is essential. Our team aims to spark a forward\u2011looking conversation about defining clinical learning through structural parameters, translating these into agreed minimum expectations, evaluating the feasibility and value of CEU accreditation. An accreditation process for CEUs may enforce a transformative commitment to a learning environment capable of producing graduates who meet global expectations for physiotherapy practice.<\/p>\n

     <\/p>\n

    In short, clinical education must evolve from a system shaped by circumstance and local tradition to one driven by evidence-informed, internationally aligned design. Minimum standards and CEU accreditation are not radical concepts \u2014they are baseline requirements for a profession that claims to value competence, safety, and public trust.<\/p><\/div>\n
